Uppingham Vietnam: Bringing 440 Years of Heritage to a New Community

Most brand projects begin with an established foundation: an existing community, a recognised presence in the market, and experiences that have already shaped how the organisation is understood.

Uppingham Hung Yen presented a different challenge. The school needed to introduce a new community in Vietnam to an institution with more than four centuries of rich history, before its first students had experienced life on campus.

Founded in the United Kingdom in 1584, Uppingham School brings with it a significant educational heritage. Its new campus in Hung Yen needed to carry the values, reputation and character of that institution into a new market, while establishing an identity that felt relevant to the students and families it would serve in Vietnam.

Building confidence before the experience begins

Established schools have years of lived experience to draw upon. Their students, results, traditions and campus life all provide tangible evidence of what families can expect.

For Uppingham Hung Yen, that story was still being created. The challenge was therefore to communicate the character and promise of an Uppingham education before the new school community had fully taken shape.

The brand identity and its application across the website, prospectus and wider marketing collateral played an important role in establishing this foundation. Imagery helped communicate aspiration, care and a global outlook, while the school’s values of curiosity, compassion and courage provided a consistent thread across communications.

Consistency across these touchpoints was particularly important. Choosing a school is a significant decision for any family, and each interaction contributes to their understanding and confidence. From the website to the prospectus and enrolment communications, every element needed to feel connected to the same institution and the same experience.

Balancing heritage with a new chapter

At the centre of the project was the balance between continuity and change.

Uppingham’s 440-year history provides a strong foundation, but Uppingham Hung Yen also represents a distinct new chapter: a purpose-built campus, a new community and the beginning of the school’s presence in Vietnam.

The objective was not simply to replicate an established British identity in a different market, nor to move away from the heritage that gives Uppingham its character. It was to find an expression that could respect both.

This is an important consideration for any established brand entering a new market. Heritage can provide credibility and meaning, but it must be considered alongside the expectations, context and community of the market it is entering.

For Uppingham Hung Yen, the result is an identity grounded in a long established educational legacy, while creating the foundation for a new community to build its own history.
