Large-scale transport networks are complex, dynamic environments to manage. At any given moment, dozens of variables need to be tracked, reported on and acted on, often under strict time pressure.
This is exactly the challenge Transdev faced. One of the world’s largest public transport operators, moving more than 14 million passengers a day, Transdev needed a smarter way to manage its light rail asset network across Sydney, including the LRV fleet running popular routes like Randwick and Parramatta.
Fortivo is a custom-built asset management platform, “asset” meaning the vehicle itself, each individual tram, along with all of its exterior and interior statutory signage. Generic asset management software existed, but nothing was built specifically around the scale and complexity of managing a live public transport network like this one.
At the core of the platform is an intelligence layer that goes beyond simply recording information. Each asset is tracked in real time, with the platform helping identify what’s missing or damaged, checking stock availability, and automatically triggering replacement orders when needed. Time-critical incidents, such as offensive content that must be removed within strict timeframes, are triaged and routed automatically to the right team, with the full process tracked from report to resolution.
Perhaps the most useful shift is the simplest one to describe: Transdev can ask Fortivo direct questions and get real answers. Which routes see the most wear? Where should resources be focused? The platform’s intelligence surfaces these patterns directly, rather than requiring manual cross-referencing across spreadsheets and reports.
Building an intelligent system from scratch takes longer than buying something off the shelf, but it means a platform that fits the operation precisely and scales with it naturally.
